Sleep Apnea Testing
Sleep Apnea Specialist | Serving Vancouver WA and Portland OR
If you suspect you or a loved one is suffering from sleep apnea, testing can help confirm diagnosis. Sleep apnea testing should always come before treatment, to determine the type of sleep apnea you are experiencing.
Sleep Apnea Tests
- Polysomnogram (PSG): This is an overnight sleep study. Polysomnograms record eye movement, REM sleep, brain activity, blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels, among other important measures.
- Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): A sleep study performed during the day. It’s used to measure how sleepy you get, and also to see whether treatments for your sleep apnea are working correctly. You are given 20 minute naps, two hours apart to measure certain functions of your brain and body.
- Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT): Another daytime sleep study that measures how alert you are during the day. They can help determine if your excessive daytime sleepiness is a safety concern.
Polysomnograms Are The First Step Toward Sleep Apnea Diagnosis
If you suspect sleep apnea, your primary care doctor will refer you to a sleep specialist to determine a diagnosis. A polysomnogram is typically the first test performed, although based on the results, you may have to undergo more or different testing to confirm sleep apnea. Sleep study centers are highly specialized centers, providing testing, diagnosing, and treatment of sleep disorders. A sleep study is always recommended before sleep apnea treatment can begin.
